History/Background - Patrick Akerman

Show in FulfordThe Akerman family first settled on Salt Spring Island in the 1860s. Patrick's great grandfather, Joseph Akerman first came to Salt Spring and was later joined by his new wife Martha Clay, whom he met after she sailed from England on the bride ship "Robert Lowe". Joseph and Martha set up their homestead in the Burgoyne/Fulford Valley of Salt Spring.

Joseph and Martha had eight children including Patrick's grandfather Ted. Ted Akerman married Ellen Gyves, a half native girl whose family lived in the Burgoyne Bay on Salt Spring and were also part of the Cowichan Indian Band. The Akerman family has lived in the Burgoyne/Fulford area ever since. Primarily farmers and woodsmen, they helped settle Salt Spring Island.

Like his ancestors before him, Patrick Akerman has lived on Salt Spring his entire life, acquiring a vast knowledge of the island, its history and its community. After graduating from high school, Patrick worked on the family farm, constructed homes and worked in the forest industry. This experience and background has proved invaluable to him in his career as a real estate agent on Salt Spring Island.

In 1971 Patrick married Brenda Underwood and they started raising a family together on their own farm. The younger generations of the Akerman family continue the tradition of calling Salt Spring home. Patrick and Brenda's children Bobby, Cathy, Gordon and Jenny have found partners, married and started their own families all on or near the family farm.
